As Lunar New Year approaches, Glodok — Jakarta’s historic Chinatown — transforms into a vibrant landscape of red lanterns, incense smoke, and bustling markets. This photo series were taken on Sunday, February 15, two days before the Lunar New Year, captures the quiet rituals, tireless preparations, and collective anticipation behind one of the most meaningful celebrations in the community.
JAKARTA FLOODS: A RECURRING STORY
Every year, many parts of Jakarta are flooded by a mix of natural and human causes. Tidal flooding (rob) from the sea meets overflowing rivers during heavy rain. Narrowed riverbanks, rapid urban growth, and poor drainage make the situation worse. Trash that clogs canals and waterways also traps the water. For many residents, floods are no longer a surprise, but a repeated reality that keeps returning and shaping daily life.
